SAFE’s mission is to ensure that all healthcare providers are equipped with skills and evidence-based knowledge to advise their patients, communities, and legislators on firearm use and ownership to prevent injuries and deaths.

Here are some of SAFE’s activities and accomplishments:
Created an online curriculum for medical students and health care professionals, Clinicians and Firearms: A Curriculum on Firearm Injury Prevention in Medical Practice
Developed resources and piloted innovative education on firearm safety for medical schools
Participated in, and led educational conferences at medical centers and national meetings
Held our annual Fall gun violence prevention symposium at our SAFE medical school chapters across the US and online
Piloted a program with our Tennessee medical school chapter to discuss safe firearm storage and distribute free gun locks during pediatric health care visits
Advocated for federal funding of gun violence research in 2019 along with US Representative Jackie Speier and Former US Representative Gabby Giffords, after which Congress approved dedicated federal funding for gun violence research through the NIH and CDC for the first time in 20 years
Worked with California Assemblyman Marc Berman to pass AB521, which tasks and funds the University of California Firearm Violence Research Center to develop a multifaceted education and training program for medical and mental health professionals on the prevention of firearm-related injury and death
Educated Congressional interns about gun violence as a public health problem
Sent physician representatives to the American Bar Association’s Multidisciplinary Summit on Gun Violence in Washington, DC
Assisted San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo's team as consultants on the Gun Harm Reduction ordinance his city adopted in 2022
Collaborated with the Silicon Valley Alliance for Gun Safety to educate local council members and pass safe firearm storage ordinances in California cities
Served as a consultant for the Santa Clara County Department of Public Health on its Cost of Gun Violence Report
Collaborated with the County of Santa Clara Behavioral Health Services on firearm suicide prevention efforts
